Cogeneration options for improving the competitiveness of a cane-based ethanol plant in Brazil † [Full subscriber]

In cane-based ethanol plants in Brazil, economic viability of these plants is advanced by hosting a bagasse-based cogeneration plant. Using the GateCycle software, cogeneration plant schemes were modelled for different ethanol distillery capacities. Using energy balances and equipment cost data, power generation cost was calculated for each of the evaluated scenarios. Indicators such as: energy utilisation factor and exergy efficiency are presented. Recommendations are presented about the most profitable scenarios considering current market price of about US$ 68.26/MWh for selling surplus power to grid and two ethanol market price levels: US$ 0.30 and 0.17 /l.
