Cogeneration in the sugarcane industry* [Full subscriber]

Abstract At this late stage of the 2014/15 crop year, it has become clear that the world sugar balance is headed to its fifth straight year of surplus. Overproduction and increased stocks have recently sent raw sugar prices to a six-and-a-half year low, worsening the financial situation of many millers and growers around the world. In this context, the maximized use of sugarcane by-products such as electricity generated from bagasse offer producers a diversified means of generating revenue and protection against the industry’s vulnerability to longer periods of depressed sugar prices.
