Bagasse as a source for fumaric acid production* [Full subscriber]

Abstract Powdered activated carbon treated lignocellulosic syrup prepared from energy cane bagasse was evaluated as a potential carbon source in the production of fumaric acid by Rhizopus oryzae ATCC® 20344TM. Fumaric acid has been identified by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of the “top 12” building block chemicals that can be potentially manufactured using renewable lignocellulosic biomass. Fumaric acid can serve as an acidulant in food and animal feeds, and as the raw material in the production of polymers and esters.
