Asia is becoming the new Brazil in renewable chemicals [Full subscriber]

Several years ago, Brazil was the hottest target for investment for players in the biofuels and bioproducts industry. Solid economic growth rates paired with cheap and easy access to feedstocks, i.e. sugar, spurred investment in the local fermentation industry. Sugar mills and ethanol plants mushroomed across the country and several downstream operations also emerged, such as in sugar-based plastics. The boom came to a halt though as slowing growth and government policies that eroded the profitability of the sugar sector took their toll on investment and expansion.
