OPX Biotechnologies and Dow Chemical partner to produce bioacrylic acid [Registered]

Dow Chemical and OPX Biotechnologies (OPXBIO) announced in early April that they have signed a joint development agreement, to develop an industrial-scale process to produce bio-based acrylic from corn and cane sugar. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. OPXBIO recently achieved the aim of producing acrylic acid at cost that would justify commercial scale expansion. The cost of producing acrylic acid from corn and cane sugar came at 70 cents and 55 cents/lb, respectively. The process developed by OPXBIO to produce acrylic acid is via the 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HPA) through its EDGETM (Efficiency Directed Genome Engineering) technology.…
