Optinol joins the biobutanol production clique [Registered]

A newly formed US-based start-up Optinol recently announced that it has achieved cost parity with ethanol for its n-butanol pilot scale plant from a wide variety of sugars including sugar cane juice, corn starch, sweet sorghum juice, molasses and cellulosic sugars. The company notes that instead of bioengineering a microbe to existing production processes which the likes of Gevo, Cobalt and Butamax are doing, it is engineering a production solution tailored to the organism (a patented non-GMO clostridium strain) that naturally produces and prolifically favors production of butanol without the co-product acetone or ethanol.
