Nuplas intends to develop and supply biobased Second Generation PLA (G2 PLA) using a patent-protected technology that converts lactides to PLA. Lactides are produced from carbohydrates from various crops via lactic acid. G2 PLA has the properties required to replace oil-based plastics in packaging applications. Used for high volume applications such as fresh produce, short shelf life products and convenience foods, biobased PLA packaging can be recycled or converted into renewable energy at end-of-life.
