Norway – Borregaard’s biorefinery demonstration plant inaugurated [Registered]

On 16 April the Norwegian Finance Minister Sigbjørn Johnsen officially inaugurated the demonstration plant at Borregaard’s production facility in Sarpsborg that will process lignocellulosic feedstocks to produce ethanol and lignin. The demonstration plant commenced preliminary operations in summer 2012, and went into full gear in the 1st quarter of 2013. The plant relies on Borregaard’s proprietary BALI technology. The BALI technology involves converting cellulose fibres to sugars for use in the production of bioethanol, while lignin is purified and destined to be used as a substitute petrochemical for various end uses.
