Nigeria plans significant expansion of sugar industry [Registered]

In a drive towards self-sufficiency, the Federal Government has drawn up a new National Sugar Master Plan (NSMP), reported Daily Trust recently. The plan which was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will also save the country significant spend on sugar imports. According to the country’s National Sugar Development Council, sugar output and imports were 35,000 tonnes and 1.1 million tonnes in 2011, respectively. Briefing State House reporters after FEC meeting, Information minister, Labaran Maku said the plan is expected to create over 37,000 permanent jobs.
