Next-generation food packaging material with antibacterial activity [Registered]

Colloidal silver has gained wide acceptance as an antimicrobial agent, and various substrates coated with nanosilver such as fabrics, plastics, and metal have been shown to develop antimicrobial properties. Scientists in Israel have successfully developed in a lab “killer paper” containing a coating of silver nanoparticles, which are powerful anti-bacterial agents. The research led by Aharon Gedanken is described in Langmuir (2011, 27 (2) : 720-726). The research extends the use of silver as antibacterial agent in other applications.
