Nearly quarter of Australia’s cane crop harvested [Registered]

Australia’s 2011 campaign has gathered pace with nearly a quarter of the crop now harvested, according to industry officials on 27 July. Around 30 million tonnes of cane forecasted to be harvested this year, up from last year’s rain affected 27.5 million tonnes, but still below a typical harvest of 33 million tonnes. According to Steve Greenwood, chief executive of the Canegrowers organisation, the harvest has commenced early this year as growers were “worried about rain”.
