Market Overview May raw sugar futures on 17th March settled down 0.08 cent, or 0.4%, at 18.17 US cents per lb, after slumping 4.1% to 17.50 US cents, the weakest for the front month since early June last year. A surplus sugar market is expected in 2017-’18 as La Nina passes, but the brunt of a possible El Nino weather pattern may change this. For now, funds have begun to reduce bullish bets on raw sugar and the absence of any significant weather concerns out of Brazil’s southern cane region will limit any rallies.
