Midori introduces a novel catalyst to separate sugars from lignocellulosic feedstocks [Registered]

In the production of cellulosic biofuels, separating cellulosic sugars cheaply is keenly sought. Midori Renewables, founded by Flagship VentureLabs recently announced its Breaking the Biomass BarrierTM technology, a novel catalyst that “melts non-food biomass into low cost sugar”. Unlike other technologies, Midori’s catalyst is a solid material, not an enzyme, micro-organism, or aqueous acid, which the company claims can be easily separated from the reaction and reused. The technology can bolt-on to existing corn, sugarcane or palm oil processing facilities, converting low value cellulosic waste into high value, usable sugars.
