Spencer & Meade (1945) note than losses fall into two categories: determined losses, that is losses which can be measured, such as pol losses in bagasse and in filter cake, and undetermined losses (UL) which cannot be measured but are obtained indirectly by subtracting the sum of all the determined losses from the total pol or sucrose in a selected material such as cane or mixed juice. UL include inversion losses, entrainment, measurement errors, etc. Here we will deal with pol losses in bagasse.
