Lignin tolerant enzymes developed to enhance cellulosic biofuels production [Registered]

The mainly EU-funded DISCO project coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed sourced cellulases and hemi-cellulases from fungi to hydrolyse lignocellulosic feedstocks to release C5 and C6 sugars for subsequent ethanol production. The project has successfully used its enzyme cocktails for processing a variety of lignocellulosic feedstocks including spruce, straw, corn cob and wheat bran. The commercialisation of these enzymes has now begun in the Netherlands. Production of cellulosic biofuels has reached critical momentum: there are a total of 15 plants being constructed in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
