LanzaTech and Invista partner to produce biobased butadiene [Registered]

LanzaTech recently announced that it is to partner with the global nylon producer Invista to produce bio-based 1,3 butadiene (BD) using LanzaTech’s gas fermentation technology. LanzaTech’s microbe can produce biofuels and chemicals from carbon monoxide rather than sugar and starch consumed in most fermentation platforms. The collaboration will initially focus on the production of butadiene in a 2-step process from LanzaTech CO-derived 2,3-butanediol (2,3 BDO). A direct single step process will also be developed to produce butadiene directly through a process of gas fermentation. Commercialization using the 2,3 BDO route to BD is expected to be in 2016.
