Kombucha tea inspires production of new class of functional biomaterials [Full subscriber]

The field of engineered living materials (ELM) aims to create novel materials with properties similar to those of natural biomaterials using genetically engineered organisms. Inspired by Kombucha tea, a trendy fermented beverage, and with US army funding, researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Imperial College London have developed a new way to generate tough, functional materials using a mixture of bacteria and yeast similar to the “kombucha mother” used to ferment tea.…
