Kenya – Smuggled sugar damaging industry [Registered]
Local news reports cites concerns from several quarters that Illegal sugar imports from neighbouring countries is damaging Kenya’s sugar industry. Some members of parliament, in particular Jakoyo Midiwo (Gem), Jared K’opiyo (Awendo), Silvance Osere (Kabondo Kasipul) and David Ochieng (Ugenya) have accused top Government officials for allowing imports to flood the Kenyan market, which is pushing local sugar companies out of business. “We are aware of cartels in the Government who are frustrating cane farmers by importing sugar,” said Siaya Senator James Orengo.
