Kenya – Five state-owned sugar factories to be privatized [Full subscriber]

On 24th of February, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office announced plans to privatize the five state-owned sugar factories and impose additional taxes in order to revive the ailing industry, according to local press reports. The privatization is driven by the fact that the state-owned sugar factories are informed by the high cost of production, poor funding, worned-out machinery, declining production of sugarcane and collapse of these factories. The factories are South Nyanza (Sony), Miwani, Nzoia, Chemelil and Muhoroni.
