Japan to reduce sugar imports [Registered]

Japan has revised down its sugar import estimate for the year to September 2012 on expectations of higher local beet sugar production, government officials said. Total imports in 2011/12 are estimated at 1.304 million tonnes, white value, down 3.7% from a year ago, the Agriculture Ministry said. Domestic sugar production is seen rising to 755,000 tonnes from 655,000 tonnes the year before. The Agriculture Ministry also expects local demand for sugar to rise in 2011/12 reaching 2.050 million tonnes for centrifugal sugar (2.023 million) and 35,000 tonnes for brown sugar (31,000).…
