Imperial Sugar will shut Gramercy refinery at end of year [Registered]

US giant Imperial Sugar will cease operations at its Gramercy sugar refinery on 31 December and reduce its packaging operations there. The refinery closure, which will put 170 out of 283 workers out of a job, is the result of its planned opening of a new $190m sugar refinery being built in Gramercy in 2011. The Louisiana Sugar Refining joint venture is with Cargill and Sugar Growers and Refiners, a co-operative with nine sugar mills and around 700 growers Any workers whose jobs are eliminated can apply for positions at Louisiana Sugar Refining, said Imperial spokesman Clinton Woods.…
