Illovo Sugar exits Mali project [Registered]

Combination of security concerns and funding difficulties has prompted Illovo Sugar to end its involvement in the Markala sugar project in Mali. Construction of 190,000 tonnes sugar factory set to commence at the end of 2012 is unlikely to now go ahead. The government was expected to contribute about $240 million to develop the agricultural component of the project, while private companies would spend about $300 million on the sugar and ethanol plants.
