Heavy rains in Central America will impact sugar production [Registered]

With harvesting expected to begin in about a month, Central American countries such as Guatemala and Nicaragua say they are expecting yields to drop as a result of relentless rain and flooding of sugarcane fields. Guatemala’s sugar association (Asocana) said damage will be minimal because most of the country’s sugarcane is nearing maturation and is less vulnerable to the flooding, although productivity of the cane is expected to drop.
