Glass with strength and toughness superior to steel [Registered]

One of the challenges that material scientists usually encounter is to fabricate materials that are both strong and tough. Strength refers to the amount of force a substance can withstand and toughness refers to its capacity to resist fracturing. A new type of damage-tolerant metallic glass, that is stronger and tougher than steel or indeed any other known material, has been developed and tested by a collaboration of researchers with the US Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the California Institute of Technology.
