Fiji – Prison inmates exploited to harvest sugar cane [Registered]

Inmates from the Fiji Corrections Service were used during the last cane campaign. They earned about FJD$200,000 (US$109,000) from harvesting sugar cane last year, according to the Fiji Times online. The inmates were paid FJD$15 (US$8.20) per tonne of cane manually harvested. With mechanized harvesting lumbering along, industry insiders say, that inmates will again be called on for their services.
