Expansion in sugar production in Brazil fosters global surplus [Registered]

The global sugar balance is likely to return to surplus in 2011/12, as Brazil heads towards a record crush, according to analysts Czarnikow latest review. The 2011/12 campaign is underway in Brazil, and with prices favouring sugar over ethanol, the analysts expect mills to produce 35 million tonnes of sugar of which 25 million is destined for export. In March, Brazilian sugar industry association Unica forecast a record sugar output of 34.6 million tonnes in 2011/12, up from 33.5 million tonnes the previous season.
