Expansion in beet sugar production drives global surplus [Registered]

In their latest review of global sugar production for 11/12, Czarnikow notes that significant growth in the beet sugar sector over the past year is likely to drive global surplus to 6.1 million tonnes raw value (mtrv). While the beet sugar production is expected to increase by 21% from 32.1 million to 38.7 million tonnes, the expansion in cane sugar production is likely to be less than 2% (from 136.0 million to 138.3 million tonnes, table 1).
