Evaporator scale [Registered]

Spencer & Meade (1948) state that “The greatest limiting factor to all evaporators is the fouling of heating surfaces”; they also include the results (on the right) obtained by analysing scale from a quadruple effect in 1900. Ninety five years later Walthew & Turner analysed scales from a quintuple effect, the results being shown on the left. Clearly silica, phosphates and oxalates are relevant and the distributions are similar. Evaporator scales, from both steam and juice sides, have been investigated by many workers.
