EU’s sugar production quotas will remain unchanged [Registered]

A Polish request to partially reverse the EU’s sugar reforms and increase sugar-beet quotas by 15% was rejected in late May by the European Commission. Warsaw told the Farm Council that the reformed EU sugar sector only supplies some 13.3 million tonnes per year to the internal market, some 2.6 million tonnes below consumption levels and is therefore missing an opportunity to expand beet-growing. The member state recommended that sugar production quotas be increased by 15% for each member state, starting from the 2011/12 season; an alternative solution would be to increase them by 5% for three subsequent marketing years…
