European Parliament members maintain beet quotas remain beyond 2015 [Registered]

There was a general consensus amongst MEPs (Members of European Parliament) debating the reform of the sugar regime on 17th September was to delay the abolition of beet quotas. Most MEP’s agreed that beet quotas should remain beyond 2015 but recognised that the sector involves other stakeholders who need to be treated fairly. Guaranteed supply to consumers at fair prices was seen to be a key objective. Party co-ordinators Albert Dess, George Lyon and Martin Hausling warned of the risks of relying upon forecasts for creating legislation especially given historical precedence in the sector.
