EU sugar quotas should be abolished in 2015 says UK minister [Registered]
Jim Paice, Minister for Agriculture and Food, restated that UK government is fully behind the proposed abolition of EU sugar quotas in 2015. Giving evidence before the House of Lords Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment and Energy Sub-Committee today, the minister noted that the current government “dislikes quotas in principle”. While admitting that the “likelihood of abolition going ahead in 2015 is slim” bearing in mind that the majority of the EU countries do not share UK’s stance, Paice acknowledged that “commitment to [the extension of quotas] to 2020 is acceptable at the last resort”.
