EU – sugar import, export quotas for 2011/12 remain unchanged [Registered]

The European Commission and member states have reached agreement on a ‘business-as-usual’ approach to managing the EU sugar market in 2011-12. Member states backed Commission plans to set the ceiling for exports of out-of-quota sugar at the usual rate of 650 000 tonnes (plus 50 000t for glucose), and to open up a 400 000t import quota for industrial sugar. The two measures, which will come into force from October, were heralded by Brussels as “a strong signal that it is attractive to grow and produce sugar”.
