EU seeks to offload sugar onto the European and world markets [Registered]
EU member states have agreed to release the bloc’s surplus sugar production onto the European and world markets in late November, in a bid to plug supply gaps and curb prices. National experts at a recent Management Committee (ManCom) meeting in Brussels voted to supply sugar produced beyond the bloc’s quota limits into the internal market, as well as giving the green light to its export. In a further measure to take the heat off sugar prices, the European Commission had proposed extra sugar imports to be drawn in to the EU through a series of tenders.
