EU parliament calls for extension of sugar quotas to 2020 [Registered]

The European Parliament’s agriculture committee (ComAgri) voted on 23rd January to extend sugar production quotas to 2019/2020 marketing year. Voting on compromise amendments to the ‘Single CMO Regulation’, the MEPs have joined around ten member states in opposing the European Commission’s plan to scrap production quotas by October 2015. EU heavyweights France and Germany are among those insisting that the existing system, covering sugar and isoglucose production, should continue until the end of the decade in order to ensure a stable market. Yet at least nine governments – some of which have given up sugar production and relinquished their quotas…
