EU must improve planning to meet renewable energy targets [Registered]

The EU has set renewable energy target of 20% by 2020. Around two-thirds of this is to be met by bioenergy. (The EU target is calculated in final energy consumption terms, whereas the contribution of biomass has been estimated regarding primary energy consumption in 2020.) However, current European bioenergy initiatives are unlikely to meet these targets according to Niina Kautto, a researcher at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University. Kautto highlights an important oversight from policy makers that may hinder target achievement – namely, competition for biomass.
