EU member states curtail sugar export plans [Registered]
EU sugar experts have blocked Commission plans to scrap weekly limits on out-of-quota sugar exports, in a move which could prevent the available amounts being cornered by the biggest operators. Managementcommittee meeting on 13 Sep’10 saw a host of member states object to the plans to replace the weekly ceiling for export licence applications with a calculation based on sugar companies’ out-of-quota capacity. Under the proposed system, companies would have been able to seek licences to fill major shares of available outof-quota sugar at the outset, provided they were able to prove their sugar production capacity.
