EU – Inclement spring weather impacts sugar beet production as acreage falls on the back of poor prices [Registered]

Sugar beet and beet sugar production in EU is expected to decline in 2013/14 due to unseasonably cold and wet spring delaying beet sowings. According to the EU spokesman Roger Waite, EU sugar output is expected to drop by 7.6% in the coming year, to 15.9 million tonnes in 2013-14, from 17.2 million tons a year earlier. In June, beet production in France was reported to be 15 days behind the average for the time of the year.
