EU Commission stands firm on sugar plans [Registered]

The Commission has confirmed its plans to put bring sugar onto the EU market at reduced tariffs, despite calls from Portugal for the Commission to slash tariffs to zero on major volumes of cane imports. Commission officials explained that reducing tariffs to zero would require the introduction of volume limits; the system Brussels intends to pursue would use tendering to specify tariffs on volumes offered for import.
