EU Commission responds to sugar price highs [Registered]

The Commission is looking to intervene on the EU sugar market as the commodity continues to hover around 30-year price highs. The Commission is mulling two options for “alleviating the problems in the internal market situation for sugar”. One of these would be to allow sale on the internal market of remaining allowances of out-of-quota sugar; these quantities – limited to 1.38 million tonnes by the WTO and set at default level of 650 000 t this year – are expressly earmarked for export under the EU’s tightly managed sugar regime.
