EU – sugar import licences approved [Registered]

Import licences into the EU for 100 000 tonnes of raw cane for refining have been approved by member states, with a reduced custom duty of €252.50 – €255.00 per tonne. The licences – which usually have a duty of €339/t – were adopted at a Single CMO Management Committee in early December, though a number of member states were left disappointed with the move. A group of countries including France and Poland are understood to have argued that out-of quota sugar produced by EU farmers should be given priority on the bloc’s internal market.
