Ethanol producers consider switching to butanol in US [Registered]

Retrofitting ethanol plants to produce butanol is considered by some producers in the US’ Corn Belt, reports New York Times. Two main companies involved in leading the retrofitting drive are Gevo and Butamax. Both companies have developed butanol production technology via bioengineered microbes. In the US, Butamax has established alliance with several ethanol producers who are considering making the switch. According to Paul Beckwith, Chief Executive of Butamax, the aim is to retrofit many plants simultaneously in 2013. Butamax is currently producing butanol from its pilot plant in Hull, UK.
