El Salvador’s 2010/11 sugar output down by 4% [Registered]

El Salvador produced 574,000 tonnes of sugar in the 2010/11 crop that started on November 15 and ended on April 1, down 4% from the previous cycle due to bad weather, said Julio Cesar Arroyo, executive director of the El Salvadoran Sugar Association. He attributed the drop in cane yields to excessive rain in May-September of last year, followed by a drought that started in October. The drop in production came despite expansion in cane production and productivity. Sugar officials said they expect production to improve in 2011/12.…
