Corrosive nature of ethanol accelerated by bacteria that feeds on it [Registered]

One of the limitations of fuel ethanol is that due to its corrosive nature it cannot be transported in existing pipeline network. Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) presented at the DOD Corrosion Conference in early August new experimental evidence that bacteria that feed on ethanol and produce acid boosted fatigue crack growth rates by at least 25 times the levels occurring in air alone.
