Cobalt makes a significant stride towards commercial scale biobutanol production [Registered]

The start-up Cobalt Technologies announced on 16th April that it has been successful in producing n-butanol at a fermentation scale greater than 100,000 litres. This is a significant stepping stone to scaling up to commercial scale which would be around 10 fold greater. Cobalt claims that ongoing process improvements at commercial scale are expected to yield at least a 40 percent cost advantage compared with petroleum-based butanol under current market.
