Climate: The good and the ugly [Full subscriber]

All members of the sugarcane industry make every effort to optimise performances. However, climate, an uncontrollable factor, can have a severely negative impact on these efforts. A quick literature search shows that this is the case with most food crops. Many authors, e.g. Lopes et al. (2011), Jangpromma et al. (2012), Terry et al (2017)  have published on the impacts of climate on sugarcane. Here actual factory performance data (obtained from the Annual Reviews of the Milling Seasons in Southern Arica) are used to provide some industrial results. Severe droughts occurred twice in S Africa over the period 1980 to 1996.…
