China set to become a leading sugar importer [Registered]

China is set to emerge as the world’s biggest importer of raw sugar in 2011/12 after bad weather reduced domestic output and has been relying on diminishing state reserves. China has ramped up imports of sugar in recent months to boost its reserves. According to shipping agency data, China was the top destination for sugar exports from the centre-south of Brazil, the world’s main exporter, in July, accounting for 645,000 tonnes.
