China likely to import sugar mainly from Brazil’s in 2011/12 [Registered]

China could soon become the top market for Brazilian sugar exports, possibly in 2011/12, according to Plinio Nastari, head of Sao Paulo-based analyst Datagro. Dr Nastari told Reuters in an interview that increasing urbanisation in China and rising incomes had boosted demand for processed foods and soft drinks in the world’s most populous country. China could surpass Russia as a major destination for Brazilian sugar, as a rise in sugar output to around 4.2m tonnes in Russia in 2011/12 will reduce its import requirement to around 1.9m tonnes, largely from Brazil.
