Cheaper alternative to retrofitting ethanol plants to produce biobutanol [Registered]

Researchers at Bristol University report a discovery that could reduce the costs of converting ethanol factories to produce butanol. Lead researcher Duncan Wass speaking at the recent 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, pointed out that “Ethanol actually is a poor alternative fuel. Butanol is much better. It contains about 30 percent more energy per gallon than ethanol, is easier to handle and more of it can be blended into each gallon of gasoline.
