CelluForce embarks on the production of an additive enhancing the performance of biobased resins [Registered]

Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) is an advanced material derived from cellulosic feedstocks recently developed by the Canada-based CelluForce. The company recently completed construction of a demonstration plant with capacity to produce one ton per day of NCC. In the production of NCC, biomass feedstock is milled and then hydrolyzed to remove lignin in particular. The resulting NCC is then separated and concentrated to create uniform, redispersible natural nanoparticles. When NCC is incorporated as a high-performance reinforcement additive to resins, their mechanical and barrier properties are significantly improved. NCC material was developed by CelluForce, in a joint venture between FPInnovations and Domtar.…
