Canada – Beet juice laden with salt used to de-ice roads [Registered]

Various municipalities in Canada are opting to use beet juice and brine mixture, rather than sand plus salt, to de-ice roads, according to local press reports. This is to save both money and reduce environmental damage. The beet-brine mixture is less corrosive than salt-sand mixtures. One rural municipality in Manitoba was getting tired of the cost and cleaning up sand from the roads every spring, so this winter, they switched to spreading a sugar beet-based cocktail called Fusion 60/40 (comprising 60% beet juice, 30% water and 10% salt) on the streets.
